Interview
With Chris Bennett
Webmaster of RCT UK. |
How did you first get into RollerCoaster Tycoon? |
I first saw RollerCoaster Tycoon advertised in the UK PC magazine, Computeractive! As I had been a fan of Bullfrog's Theme Park for a couple of years and having recently acquired internet access I headed over to the official site. Very impressed with what I saw I decided to download the demo, my first ever download and it took nearly 3 hours but they were certanily worth it. In April it was over to PC World with my mum to get to full version of Original RCT. |
Why did you decide to build a website on RollerCoaster Tycoon? |
After completing many of the scenarios in the original version of RCT I decided to see how many fans like me were on the internet. RollerCoaster Tycoon UK was one of the several sites that I found. I had been visiting the site for a couple of months before I looked at the discussion board, this was another first as I had never used a discussion board before but soon got into it. I e-mailed Mark asking if he needed any more moderators and was accepted. Then when Jon left the site he offered me the role as webmaster and I gladly took it. |
Did you think your website would get this big? |
Having been a moderator for RCTUK before it became "mine" I knew the site was popular but I never thought that we would still be so popular, nearly 28 months after the site originally opened. |
Did your ride exchange boost your website? |
I used the Ride Exchange when it was available on the official site and found it a rather useful tool. I was sorry to see it go and became even more annoyed when it didn't return after the promised 2 months, then 4 months, then 6 months, then a year. As it became more apparent that we wouldn't be seeing the exchange return soon i was glad when Avi offered to code on for the site. The system has been extremely popular, we have received a lot of good feedback about it and the sites hits have been given a healthy boost. |
Have you any future plans for your website? |
I don't currently have any major immediate plans for the future of RollerCoaster Tycoon UK but do intend to keep the site open for a long time yet. RollerCoaster Tycoon is still a very popular game and I intend to keep the site updated for all the fans out there. |
What would you most like to see in RollerCoaster Tycoon? |
RollerCoaster Tycoon is an amazing game but I would like to see more advanced control if you want it so you can build more realistic rides and parks. Another feature which it seems everyone would like is a 3D/Ride-Your-Coaster mode and it would be great to see this too. |
What do you like most about RollerCoaster Tycoon? |
My favourite thing about RollerCoaster Tycoon is the fact that you can create something of your own, watch it grow, see how the peeps react and keep improving and working on it. This way you can create some truly wonderful parks and rides. |
How often do you play on RollerCoaster Tycoon? |
The amount of time I spend playing the game has dropped since I first bought it but I still fire it up every weekend and quite often during the week when I've got some free time. I also use the game quite often for the running of the site and judging of RCTUK Choice however I don't consider this as playing the game but working with the game. |
Do you have any tips for people just starting an RollerCoaster Tycoon website? |
I think the most important thing is to try and have something exclusive, not just repeating things you can find elsewhere on the internet as people will have no reason to visit your site then. Also all the basics about clean and easy to navigate design are important too in attracting visitors to your site. |
What would you rate RollerCoaster Tycoon out of 10? |
Back in 1999 I would have probably rated the game 10 out of 10 although now I think I would give it about an 8. Although still a great game we've seen nothing new for a while however it will remain a highly re-playable game for many years to come. |
If you could change anything in the game what would it be? |
I'm not sure exactly what I'd change in the game. There are the big things such as 3D view, etc but I think these would seriously alter the games character and RollerCoaster Tycoon would no longer be quite the same if I did that. |
I see you have joined up with RCT Station to provide a better chat have you any plans to do the same with the forums? |
The reason for this team up was a mixture of things. Firstly the chat is something that is rarely used and by joining up we hoped to change this a little and RCT Station had also been looking into a chat room around the same time. We don't have any plans for combining the forums as these are both successful individually and we see no need to join them. |
If you could take over the official website would you and what changes would you make? |
I think the main change if I took over the official site would be to get the ride exchange running once more! I'd also like to give it more community like features such as forums/chat for fellow RCT players to converse together. |
How often do you spend working on your site a week? |
The amount of time I spend actually updating the site can vary greatly from week to week. At times I will become quite enthusiastic about the site and make lots of updates in a short time, other times I will spend no time working on the site at all. It all depends on my mood and time available I suppose. |
Do you think there will be an RCT 2 or any more add-on packs??ks? |
I doubt we will see any more add-on packs for RollerCoaster Tycoon but I do believe that we will see RCT 2 sometime in the future. It would be foolish for Chris not to take advantage of RollerCoaster Tycoon's success and expand on it. |
